Dear Guidance Counsellor:

Let me introduce to you the Ontario Horticulture Education Council. As a collaboration of post-secondary landscape/horticulture instructors and program directors, high school teachers of horticulture courses, and industry members, this group has been formed to help streamline and coordinate educational opportunities in the vibrant and rewarding horticulture industry sectors. Connections to industry groups and associations, high schools, and government bodies are continually being developed and enhanced. One of our first 'projects' has been to create a website and flyer directed towards high school students planning their careers, which have been sent to all High Schools in Ontario.

These flyers depict educational opportunities in Ontario's Horticulture Industry, and point towards our website, www.hortcareers.com . You are invited to explore the industry, its connections and viability, through these and other linked and related sources. Our intent is to show that career choices in this industry are worthwhile, and with the dramatic expansion and growth in the 'green industry', opportunities abound.

Did you know that:
  • Ontario's horticulture industry is a world leader in innovation, business, training, and enhancing the quality of life?
  • Landscape/horticulture (as opposed to food horticulture) is estimated to be a $6.5 billion annual industry sector in Ontario, likely to double in size by 2008?
  • Some 100,000 people are employed in various capacities from labourers to skilled trades/technical experts to owners/managers?
  • Financial rewards and job satisfaction are high even in this generally seasonal industry?
  • Excellent career opportunities exist in plant production in greenhouses and nurseries, in retail sales, and in services such as design-build and maintenance?
  • Training and education programs range from certificates and apprenticeships to diplomas and degrees, at nearly twenty locations in Ontario?
We invite you to have a look, to contact any of the OHEC individuals and locations listed on the website, and to see what possibilities there are. The OHEC group exists to provide coordination between industry sectors, program types, and facility locations, and to liaise across the various Ontario Ministries providing horticulture education. We are a volunteer group with a big heart for 'our' industry. You very likely know someone who works in this industry, and certainly have connections to the services and products that are available. Give us a try - big things are in the works!

Sincerely,
Ken Nentwig M.L.A.
